MD Spring Fever: Find a Trail Near You

Sunny days and pleasant temperatures inspire many of us to venture outdoors. A spring hike is the perfect way to get fresh air and burn off some calories, too.  Hiking in spring is a wonderful way to experience the beauty of nature and enhance our mood.  There are many hiking trails, waterways, and other natural resources that Maryland has to offer.

Maryland is home to a diverse number of wildflowers.  Vibrant hues of pink, purple, blue, yellow, and white are popping up.  Alumroot is found in mountain regions and the Piedmont Plateau.    This perennial wildflower has purple leaves and produces tall spikes of small pink or white flowers that attract hummingbirds and bees.  Black-eyed Susan is a striking flowering plant with bright yellow or orange flowers and a black center.  Bees and butterflies like this flower. The delicate blue flowers of the Blue Wood Aster can be found blooming in wooded areas and along streams.

Waterfalls flow more vigorously in spring, thanks to melting snow and increased rainfall.  Swallow Falls in Garrett County has several spectacular waterfalls.  Great Falls on the Potomac River is a sight to see.  Cunningham Falls in Frederick County, Cascade Falls in Howard County and Gunpowder Falls in Baltimore County are also worth a visit.

Another treat in spring is the return of migratory birds.  Warblers are small, colorful songbirds with vibrant plumage.  The Carolina Wren also can also carry a tune. The Baltimore Oriole has bright orange feathers and stands out against green foliage.  American Goldfinches transform from dull brown to bright yellow.  The Eastern Bluebird is a beautiful bright blue. Indigo Buntings may also be spotted.  Hummingbirds, Bright red cardinals and orange-breasted American Robins are also seen regularly.

Maryland has a wide range of hiking trails, from the eastern shore to the mountains in the central and western parts of the state.  There are hundreds of them to choose from.

The Billy Goat trail runs along the Potomac River where hikers can see spectacular views of Great Falls.  Looking for shark teeth? The Red Trail to Calvert Cliffs has a fascinating fossil beach. Patapsco Valley State Park features several hiking trails, Cascade Falls, and lovely views of the Patapsco River.  The Maryland Heights trail is considered one of the most scenic in the state.   It’s a bit of a climb, but offers an awesome overlook of Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia from the top.  Thousands of migratory birds can be spotted along the trails of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, near Cambridge, Maryland.

Before you venture out, make sure you are  prepared.  Study a map of the trail you plan to hike and take it with you.  Check out the current weather conditions as well. Bring plenty of water and snacks to stay hydrated and keep your energy up.  Carry a flashlight, first aid kit, a whistle and a multi-tool with you.  Dress in layers in clothing appropriate for the weather.  Sturdy hiking shoes or boots are also a must.  Hiking poles may also be useful if you will be tackling uneven terrain.

Hiking offers many health benefits to those who participate.  It reduces the risk of heart disease, lowers blood pressure, reduces anxiety and depression, burns calories, improves sleep, and strengthens muscles and bones.  Hitting the trails can no doubt lead to better health.  Happy hiking!
